Today, Amazon Inc. (NASDAQ:$AMZN) has announced that it has opened a wind farm in Texas. In a statement dated Thursday, the tech giant said that its new wind farm would add over 1 million megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy to the grid annually.
The facility is located in Scurry County and has over 100 turbines. The turbines stand an impressive 300 feet and measure over double the wingspan of the Boeing 787.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was on sight, christening the project by breaking a bottle of champagne over the monolithic 300-foot wind turbine.
In the statement, Kara Hurst, Amazon worldwide director of sustainability, said, “Investing in renewable energy is a win-win-win-win – it’s right for our customers, our communities, our business, and our planet.”
Amazon plans to add over 35 wind and solar projects across the U.S. in addition to its current 18 current projects.
“These are important steps toward reaching our long-term goal to power our global infrastructure using 100 percent renewable energy,” Hurst said.
The U.S. is home to the largest and fastest-growing wind market in the world, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. In the fourth quarter last year, America’s first offshore wind farm began operation. The Block Island Wind Farm is a 30-megawatt, five-turbine installation located just off the coast of Rhode Island.
