McDonald’s Is Going to Sell a McVegan Burger

McVegan Burger

If you’re a vegan who loves fast-food, there aren’t a whole lot of options out there depending on where you go. One more option is about to become available, though, because McDonald’s (NYSE:MCD) is going to start selling a McVegan burger.

To start with, the vegan alternative meal is only going to be available in Sweden and Finland, but hundreds of restaurants in those countries will be getting the McVegan burger added to their menus starting on December 28.

The McVegan will be made up of a soy patty, bun, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard, oil, and the pièce de résistance is the eggless sandwich sauce.

McDonald’s says that its new burger is “tasty and has a good texture” to it, and is a response to the growing demand for vegetarian and vegan options. The burger will become a part of the permanent menu in Sweden and Finland, where it hopes to capitalize on the demand for plant-based food that is better for the environment due to the smaller climate impact that it has when compared to the impact a meat patty has on greenhouse gas emissions.

McDonald’s created the McVegan with Orkla (OTC:ORKLY), which is a company that specializes in Norwegian food. The burger was tested before the decision was made to place it on the permanent menu. Those who tested the McVegan have said that they were impressed by what they tried – it tastes good! Not only that, but according to Mikael Malkamaki, one of the testers of the burger, it actually tastes like a regular hamburger. Malkamaki said that he would eat the burger again.

McDonald’s is one of the many chain restaurants that is looking to get into the plant-based market. In fact, almost 10% of the food launches that occurred in Sweden over the course of this year were for vegan food items.

It’s no surprise that McDonald’s would want to get in on the vegan market while it’s still fresh. Vegan food sales went up by almost 8% around the world, making $12.8 billion, and the market is still growing.
