NVIDIA and Intel Compete for Rule Over Autonomous Vehicle Market

NVIDIA and Intel

NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) both have stakes in the autonomous vehicle industry, and everybody’s waiting to see who will come out on top.

Early in October, NVIDIA claimed that its new Pegasus computing platform will enable the highest levels of autonomous driving, and could even end up in ride-hailing taxis. For some, this announcement put NVIDIA as the front-runner in the autonomous vehicle industry.

Intel wasn’t to be left behind though. CEO Brian Krzanich introduced to the world Intel’s EyeQ5 SOC. This program, with the help of Intel’s recent acquisition Mobileye and its expertise in the driver-assistance sector, will beat out all competition by 2.4 times the performance-per-watt. EyeQ5 SOC will be a chip designed to help self-driving cars function at even high levels than NVIDIA’s program, claims Krzanich.

“The autonomous car is going to be one of the biggest data collectors, data generators that comes out in the next decade or so,” said Krzanich. “It’s not only gathering data about cars and vehicles around you, but capturing data on street signs, streetlights and other points of interest that allow us to navigate and drive safely.”

According to Mobileye, EyeQ5 aims to have Fully Autonomous Driving (Level 5) vehicles out by 2020.

Intel is also working with Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)-unit Waymo, Delphi Automotive (NYSE:DLPH), and BMW (OTC:BMWYY) on self-driving cars.

Intel certainly has its fingers in many different aspects of the autonomous vehicle market, but will NVIDIA’s focus ultimately put it on top?

Who do you think is going to rule the market – NVIDIA or Intel?

Our final words on the subject come from Krzanich himself: “It truly takes a team to bring an autonomous vehicle, let alone an autonomous industry, to life.”
