On Friday, at the G-20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, President Donald Trump said that he “absolutely” still wants Mexico to pay for the purpose wall along the US-Mexico border.
During the meeting between Trump and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, a reporter asked Trump whether he still wanted Mexico to pay for the massive wall. “Absolutely,” the president said, according to a pool report.
Mexico has repeatedly stated that the country would not be paying for the wall, a proposition that won Trump some of his loudest applause during the 2016 presidential campaign. However, in recent months, it seems that Trump has spoken less about getting Mexico to pay for a wall, which is aimed at controlling the rush of illegal immigration over the US’s southern border. In fact, last month, Trump even proposed including solar panels on a border wall, saying “this way, Mexico will have to pay much less money.”
All eyes were on this meeting in Germany as this was the first meeting between the two leaders since last August. The two leaders had a meeting set for January but Pena Nieto had canceled because of the border wall issue.
Before being asked about the border wall, Trump said: “We’ve all had a very successful day and a very interesting day.” He added, “it’s great to be with my friend the president of Mexico. We’re negotiating NAFTA and some other things with Mexico. Let’s see how it all turns out. But I think we’ve made very good progress.”
