Trump Says Removal of Confederate Statues is “Sad” and “So Foolish”

Another day, another Donald Trump headline. On Thursday, President Trump criticized the removal of Confederate monuments, saying the removal was both “sad” and “so foolish.” Interestingly, this tweet comes days after neo-Nazis and white supremacists violently protested the removal of a statue of the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia.

To no surprise, Trump took to Twitter to make these statements. “Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments,” the president said in a series of tweets. “You can’t change history, but you can learn from it.”

This entire week Trump has been criticized for the comments he made on Tuesday in which he blamed “both sides” for the violent protests in the college town. Even though Trump denounced the neo-Nazi and white supremacists who protested, he did say there were “very fine people” amongst those protesting the removal of Lee’s statue.

Reiterating his comments on Tuesday, Trump tweeted today that the removal of Confederate statues has the potential to lead to the removal of monuments of the US’s founding fathers.

“Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish!” Trump tweeted. “Also the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced.”

The takeaway? Thanks to Trump’s latest tweet, it is now clear that the president believes he had reacted appropriately to the protests in Charlottesville. However, deciding to side with those opposed to removing Confederate monuments is bound to create controversy, as the white supremacists and neo-Nazis were protesting the exact same cause.
