It seems that Nintendo (TYO:$7974) is once again using the power of nostalgia to attract consumers. Last year, the video game giant’s release of the mini NES Classic Edition — an homage to the company’s popular console from the 80s — was met with roaring success. As a result, Nintendo announced on Monday, June 26, that it will be paying homage to another nostalgia — this time from the 90s — the Super NES Classic Edition.
The Super NES Classic is almost like a smaller, more portable version of the original 90s console. The main difference between the original console and the rebooted version is that the 2017 system will support two wired controllers instead of just one.
It isn’t just Nintendo that is using nostalgia to up its revenue. In early June, AtGames (traded privately) announced that it will be releasing mini versions of its 2000s console Atari Flashback 8 Gold and 90s console the Sega Genesis Flashback this fall. The mini Atari Flashback will include 105 built-in games, including classics such as “Pac-Man” and “River Raid”. The mini Sega Genesis won’t carry built-in games, instead, it will have 85 physical games available for its cartridge port.
Although other companies are also playing into nostalgia, Nintendo is also growing through releases of newly developed consoles. Its latest console, the Nintendo Switch, was released in March and has been met with enthusiasm from the general public. Releasing a mini Super NES Classic Edition seems to just be the cherry on top.
The Super NES Classic is set to launch on September 29, 2017. It will cost US$79.99.
There will be 21 built-in games in the mini version of the Super NES Classic Edition. They are:

- Kirby’s Dream Course
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Mega Man X
- Secret of Mana
- Star Fox

- Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
- Super Castlevania IV
- Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- Super Mario World
- Super Metroid
- Super Punch-Out!!
- Yoshi’s Island
The mix of classic games and more modern ones (Star Fox 2 has never been released), as well as the play nostalgia, helps set the mini Super NES Classic Edition for another potentially roaring success for Nintendo.
