The New Apple Watch Can Detect Afib and Perform an ECG

New Apple Watch

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) just released the specs to its latest products yesterday and the tech community is buzzing. The computer hardware and cellular device manufacturer debuted its new Apple watch, along with four new iPhones.

New Apple Watch Series 4

The Apple Watch Series 4 has been completely re-designed and re-engineered from its Series 3. The new watch’s display is over 30 percent larger and is integrated into a thinner and slimmer case.

The new Apple watch has watchOS 5 and is set with new revolutionary health capabilities, the official Apply press release states. The Series 4 watch has an electric heart rate sensor that is able to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) using the new ECG app and detect atrial fibrillation (aFib).

The new ECG app has already been given a De Novo classification by the FDA.

“We’re thrilled Apple Watch has become an essential part of people’s lives,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “The completely redesigned Apple Watch Series 4 continues to be an indispensable communication and fitness companion, and now with the addition of groundbreaking features, like fall detection and the first-ever ECG app offered directly to consumers, it also becomes an intelligent guardian for your health.”

The new Apple watch with GPS will be available for order on Apple’s official website on September 14th and will be introduced in 26 countries. The Apple Watch Series 4 with GPS and Cellular will be available to only 16 countries.

Both products will be available for purchase in-store on Friday, September 21st.

Apple Stock Movement

Yesterday, news about Apple’s latest products were leaked to mainstream media earlier than the company anticipated. Developers at Apple accidentally enabled the sitemap, just long enough for people to take screenshots of the company’s latest products.

At the time, shares of Apple were actually in red yesterday. However, since the official announcement came for the new iPhones and new Apple watch, the stock jumped up and is currently trading in the green.

According to Yahoo Finance, AAPL is currently trading at $226.39 a share, up $5.32 (2.41%). Since yesterday’s close, the stock has shot up nearly 3%.
