Shaw Earnings Report: $91M Loss and Partnership with Walmart

Shaw Earnings Report

On Thursday, the Shaw earnings report was posted for the third-quarter of 2018. Overall, the report was both good and bad.

While a quarterly loss was present in the third-quarter, Shaw Communications (NYSE:SJR) did announce that it has entered into some new partnerships. Specifically, a partnership with Walmart Canada (NYSE:WMT).

Shaw Earnings Report: Partnership with Walmart Canada

In Q3, Shaw Communications saw a quarterly loss of $91M. Why? Well, it’s mostly due to the fact that it cut the value of its Corus Entertainment investment. The latter is currently struggling on the marketplace after slashing its dividend

With that being said, there was some good to come out of the Shaw earnings report. For instance, Shaw has entered into a partnership with Walmart Canada.

What does the partnership entail? Good question. Under the comprehensive distribution agreement, Walmart Canada will start selling Freedom Mobile products.

For those who don’t know, Freedom Mobile products are Shaw-owned Wireless products.

Across Canada, there will be 140 Walmart stores selling the Freedom Mobile devices. This will give both Walmart a new source of income while giving Shaw a wider consumer audience.

It’s All Part of a Plan

It is unfortunate that $91M was lost in the third-quarter. However, there is an indication that Shaw is sticking to its promises, getting innovative, and growing. And really, what more can you ask from a company?

In the second-quarter 2018 Shaw earnings report, the company announced The Mobile Shop. And now, the partnership with Walmart is a clear attempt at building on that announcement.

The Takeaway

What do you think of the following: 1) the overall Shaw earnings report and 2) Walmart Canada selling Freedom Mobile devices?

Personally, I think it’s nice to see companies working together, rather than in competition. It’s a partnership that is likely to benefit not only both sides but the general public as well.

Do you agree?
