Facebook (NASDAQ:$FB) has extended the feature that allows users to mark themselves as safe during natural disasters or attacks. The feature, called Safety Check, now has an entire page dedicated to it. A promotional photo shows the Safety Check page as a news feed of people marking themselves safe in disasters like earthquakes, typhoons, and attacks. Users can also look at disasters around the world, making the new Safety Check page a bit unsettling to some.
Given recent events, it can be said that the social media giant has extended this particular feature to recognize the unfortunate fact that terrorist attacks and natural disasters happen all around the world regularly. But it’s not all doom and gloom. In addition to dedicating an entire tab/page to Safety Check, Facebook has also added a feature where people can donate and offer other help, like provide food and shelter, during disasters or attacks.
Like many fresh features, though, Facebook’s newest app isn’t immune from glitches. A recent bug that has surfaced is that the feature could activate when no disasters are taking place, which could lead to concerned family and friends. As well, even with an updated version of its app, Facebook’s Safety Check isn’t quite so easy to locate. Users have to access their far right screen filled with other vaguely-prominent Facebook features and scroll until they find the Safety Check tab.
Facebook has said that the implementation of the new feature is to begin today, August 21st, and expand throughout the next few weeks.
