The name Henrik Fisker is a well-known man to many in the automotive design industry, responsible for designing many iconic cars such as the BMW Z8, the Aston Martin DB9, and the Galpin-Fisker Mustang Rocket, amongst many others. Fisker was also responsible for the creation of the world’s first premium plug-in hybrid car, the Fisker Karma.
As such, Fisker has caught the attention of many when he teased back in 2016 about an electric vehicle that would serve as a competitor to Tesla’s (NASDAQ:$TSLA) as well as a successor to the Fisker Karma. Just recently, Fisker revealed what the car looked like in a tweet. In the tweet, Fisker attached a photo of the new vehicle along with the caption, “Fisker EMotion: World’s most advanced EV. 400 mile + range, 9 min fast charging, autonomous & connected. Very proud of what we are creating!”.
The Fisker EMotion will be the first vehicle produced by Fisker Inc. (traded privately) — Fisker’s rebranded company after he sold his Fisker Automotive brand in 2014 and it was renamed Karma Automotive. The EMotion is one of the two electric cars that Fisker Inc. plans to produce. Unlike the Model S, Fisker Inc.’s second electric vehicle will be aimed towards the mass market rather than as a luxury vehicle.
While Fisker Inc.’s first product is definitely a beautifully designed car — which came as a surprise to no one — it’s the impressive technology behind it that really excites car enthusiasts. In Fisker’s tweet, he says that the EMotion will have a 400-mile range, beating the 350-mile range of the Tesla Model S. As well, Fisker boasts that the car can be charged in just nine minutes, relying on a newly developed battery designed by researchers at UCLA. Unlike the lithium-ion mix that has taken over the battery industry, the battery of the Fisker EMotion will make use of graphene. However, the battery is still pending approval from higher-ups. Most intriguingly, Fisker’s tweet also revealed that the EMotion will have self-driving abilities.
Many details are still unclear about Fisker’s newest project — such as pricing and release dates, amongst other concerns. However, a lot of people are looking forward to more information. If Fisker Inc.’s car takes off and its second model receives the same treatment, Tesla could be gaining a competitor.
