Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) is set to collaborate with Grubhub to offer home delivery of its coffees and customized beverages in select U.S. markets, responding to changing consumer preferences amid inflationary pressures. Initially launching in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Illinois, the partnership aims to extend nationwide coverage by August, leveraging Grubhub’s extensive customer base.
While Starbucks has existing delivery arrangements with DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Postmates, the new alliance with Grubhub seeks to capitalize on the latter’s large customer network. Starbucks observed robust double-digit growth in its U.S. delivery segment during the past quarter, prompting the expansion strategy.
Meg Mathes, Starbucks’ Vice President of Digital Experiences, anticipates that the partnership with Grubhub will facilitate further growth by enhancing the availability of Starbucks products to Grubhub’s vast customer base. The collaboration aligns with Starbucks’ efforts to adapt to shifting consumer behavior, particularly as it navigates challenges in its key U.S. and China markets.
To incentivize customers, Starbucks plans to offer zero delivery charges, reduced service fees, and exclusive offers through Grubhub’s monthly membership program. Delivery services will be accessible through Grubhub’s mobile app and website, streamlining the ordering process for consumers.
Grubhub, a subsidiary of Just Eat Takeaway.com NV, boasts partnerships with various restaurant chains, including McDonald’s and Wendy’s, as well as grocery delivery platforms like Gopuff and Buyk. Moreover, its collaboration with Starship Technologies introduces robot delivery services on college campuses, further diversifying its delivery ecosystem.
Amazon’s recent integration of Grubhub into its platform underscores the growing significance of food delivery services, providing consumers with additional avenues to access Grubhub’s offerings. The partnership reflects the evolving landscape of food delivery, with companies leveraging strategic alliances to enhance customer accessibility and convenience.
