Microsoft Unveils Smartwatch Plans

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:$MSFT) has reportedly filed a patent application for its new smartwatch that could soon compete with the Apple Watch and other wearables.

Patently Apple uncovered the patent filing with the following information:

“While the body of the Microsoft watch will naturally contain vital components, users will also be able to add functionality to their watch by snapping in specialty modules in the form of watch band links. This very concept mirrors one that Apple is likewise attempting to patent.”

While the watch’s initial filing and product may never seen be produced, it’s nonetheless interesting to see Microsoft attempting to expand its efforts in the hardware space.

Microsoft shares fell to $0.21 in pre-market trading Tuesday, which is a 0.28% decrease. Year-to-date, Microsoft has gained 20.69% versus a 11.65% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period.

According to StockNews.Com, Microsoft is ranked #1 of 64 stocks in the Software-Application category.
