American consumers spent a record $9.12 billion U.S. shopping online during Black Friday this year, according to Adobe, which tracks digital retail sales.
Online sales for the day after U.S. Thanksgiving were up 2.3% from 2021, and electronic sales were up 221% compared to an average day in October of this year, said Adobe.
Online sales of toys rose 285% from Black Friday last year, while exercise equipment sales through the internet increased 218% from a year earlier.
Adobe also reported that many consumers used payment plans on Black Friday this year. Buy Now Pay Later payments increased 78% from a year ago as consumers continue to struggle with inflation and higher costs for various items.
Some of the most popular items sold during this year’s Black Friday event included video game consoles, drones, Apple (AAPL) MacBooks, and toys such as Fortnite, Roblox, and Disney’s (DIS) Encanto.
Black Friday shoppers also broke a record for mobile orders, as 48% of online sales this year were made using smartphones, an increase from 44% last year.
The record spending comes on the heels of a strong day of Thanksgiving shopping, in which consumers shelled out an all-time high of $5.29 billion U.S. online, up 2.9% year-over-year.
Although Black Friday is over, e-commerce activity is expected to remain strong today (November 28) on Cyber Monday.
According to Adobe, Cyber Monday is expected to drive $11.2 billion U.S. in spending, up 5.1% from last year.
