The future may look grim for the fashion line Marchesa. The line, co-founded by Georgina Chapman, is in a precarious position after the recent string of allegations of sexual harassment and assault came out against Chapman’s husband, Harvey Weinstein.
Marchesa and Helzberg Diamonds were planning to release a new collection of engagement rings. However, the deal fell apart the same day that the New York Times first published the article on the allegations against Weinstein.
The company has also faced a social media organized boycott of their brand. Keren Craig, co-founder of the company, had to cancel Marchesa’s summer preview for 2018, which was planned to take place last week.
Despite Chapman publicly leaving Weinstein after the news broke, customers are still getting cold feet about the brand.
Wedding stylist Diane Lloyd Roth told the Post, “They don’t want the association. The first question when someone’s getting married is, ‘Who are you wearing?’”
The brands focus in on their bridal gowns, an item that such accusations greatly affect. It’s expected that many actresses will also pull their support for the brand. Previously, stars who worked with Weinstein would often sport the brand, but after the allegations, it’s unlikely that stars such as Renee Zellweger, Cate Blanchett or Blake Lively will continue to wear the brand.
Lainey Gossip blog author Maria Tallarico wrote, “With all the coercion, how much goodwill, if any, has Marchesa built up with stylists and actresses? Can you truly build relationships if you are pressuring people into your gowns?”
The New York Times also reported that they had asked six top stylists who had previously dressed celebrities in Marchesa if they would continue to support the brand. Not a single stylist would comment on it.
“No star is ever going to want to wear the brand again,” said one unidentified New York fashion publicist.
