Last Tuesday, SiriusXM (NASDAQ:SIRI) announced that Steve Bannon, who was President Trump’s chief sta strategist, is set to be a host on the “Breitbart News Daily” radio show. To no surprise, Bannon’s return sparked a considerable amount of backlash.
The first to vocalize their disappointment in SiriusXM was Seth Rogan. The actor tweeted on Friday that he had canceled his scheduled press tour on SiriusXM, adding, “I can’t bring myself to appear on the same service that has decided to support Steve Bannon.”
After that, singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge announced on Friday that she would cut ties with Volume, which is a SiriusXM music channel.
“After news that @SIRIUSXM has given Steve Bannon a show, I can no longer in good conscience be a part of my show,” Etheridge tweeted, adding, “I will fight for anyone’s right to free speech. I will not be a part of amplifying or normalizing hate speech.”
On Sunday, Broadway actor John Leguizamo joined the conversation, tweeting that he had “just canceled my #SiriusXM because they hired #Bannon! No hate mongers!”
It’s not just celebrities who were using the hashtag #BoycottSiriusXM over the weekend. In fact, according to the tracking site Keyhole, that particular hashtag was shared by thousands of users over the course of both Saturday and Sunday.
