Trump Ends Family Separation – But It Should Have Never Happened

Trump ends family separation

Trump ends family separation: The week is almost over, and countries in North America could not have had a more different week. In Canada, cannabis was legalized yesterday, with the law going into effect around September. This makes Canada the first G-7 nation to legalize cannabis, and the passing of Bill C-45 ends 90 years of prohibition. In America, however, the week panned out a little differently.

The United States has been shown in an extremely negative light this week, due to the Trump zero tolerance policy.

On Monday, photos surfaced of children (who had been separated from their parents) locked in cages at the Mexican border. This sparked public outrage – as it should. On Tuesday, Trump was defiant over his zero-tolerance policy, saying that the children need to be taken away so that the illegal border jumper parents can learn. Again, these comments both enraged and brought the masses to tears.

And finally on Wednesday, June 20th, after more public outcries, and after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau added his two cents in, Trump announced that he signed an executive order to end family separation at the Mexican border.

Trump Ends Family Separation

After an overflow of condemnation, Trump disclosed Wednesday that he signed an executive order to end the division of migrant children from their parents at the border. While this is good news, it’s certainly not something that should be celebrated, nor should Trump receive any sort of praise for making the decision to #KeepFamiliesTogether. This sort of thing should never have happened in the first place.

Trudeau voiced his disapproval of Trump’s choice loudly. Today, at Parliament Hill, Justin Trudeau, son of Pierre Trudeau, the 15th Prime Minister of Canada, said that what is happening “in the United States is wrong.” He spoke of the families involved, saying he “can’t imagine” what they must be enduring. He also said that “this is not the way we do things in Canada.”

Trudeau’s words ring true for many and reflect Trudeau’s own political actions. Since elected, Trudeau has been very vocal about Canada’s openness to refugees seeking shelter.

The Takeaway

Right now, it’s unclear as to how Trump plans on reversing the zero tolerance policy. And while we should feel glad that these children will, hopefully, be returned to their parents, we can’t now let this issue fade to the back of our minds – which is something we have seen happen many times in the media.

Trump ends family separation, but it’s not enough to make right the action in the first place.

Nations around the world need to come together to make sure something like this never happens again. On top of that, we need to make sure it does not continue right under our noses.
