Epic Games (Private) just announced major news relating to its popular game that parents across the nation are all tired of—Fortnite. What’s the news? Well, Fortnite is available for Android now.
This is huge because the game has taken the world by storm recently, similar to that of Pokemon Go two years ago, and young and old alike are spending hours and money on this gaming phenomenon.
Fortnite for Android
Fortnite Battle Royale was released back on iOS earlier this year, and earlier this summer Epic Games also released it on the Nintendo Switch. The company has now confirmed that the Android Version of the game will be available exclusively through the Fortnite website.
Users can now visit the main website and download the Fortnite launched, which will allow them to download the game onto their device. CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, explained to TechCrunch in an email why the company chose to put the Android version on the Fortnite website instead of the Google Play Store:
“On open platforms like PC, Mac, and Android, Epic’s goal is to bring its games directly to customers. We believe gamers will benefit from competition among software sources on Android. Competition among services gives consumers lots of great choices and enables the best to succeed based on merit.”
The Google Play Store charges a 30 percent fee for an in-app purchase (Apple also charges this), which is probably the reason for the website download version—smart.
Game Success $$$
Fortnite is part of the ‘freemium’ gaming model that has become a popular choice among game developers as of late. Basic functions of the game are free, but there are in-game purchases, which is where the revenue comes from. Epic Games has already made $1 billion on Fortnite through in-game purchases alone.
These purchases offer no competitive advantage to buyers, but players can purchase outfits (skins), accessories, and dance moves for their avatars. The game just celebrated its one year anniversary. If Epic Games continues to grow, it remains unknown if the company will go public.
So, Fortnite is available for Android now—are you excited?
