For those who didn’t know, deliveries of Tesla’s Model 3 are set to start this month. The Palo Alto company believes that the premium sedan will attract hundreds of thousands of new customers. Going further, in an attempt to expand its automotive business, Tesla (NASDAQ:$TSLA) will now open 100 new service centers and turn out 350 mobile service vans. To make this move a reality, Tesla plans to hire more than 1,000 technicians who will help meet consumer demands for the upcoming Model 3 sedan.
If all goes as planned, Tesla’s new service centers will open in cities around the United States, however, the centers will mostly be in areas of the country where Tesla has high reservation numbers for the vehicle. As a result of the move, Tesla’s total number of service centers has reached 250.
It’s important to note that the new mobile service vans will mostly be added stateside. Essentially, these vans will go to your home or office and repair your car while you wait, typically in an hour or less. It doesn’t stop there, however. These vans will be customer-friendly, featuring an espresso machine, snacks, and kids’ toys. Additionally, these vehicles will be able to perform the majority of duties that don’t need a lift such as a battery charge. Until recently, Tesla only had roughly 30 mobile repair vans, which were used when the owner lived too far from a service center.
According to Tesla, the additional mobile service vans and technicians will be in place by the end of 2017 and the new service centers will be available in a year. By 2018, Tesla is expected to manufacture 500,000 vehicles, which is more than the 84,000 it sold in 2016.
