Google and Facebook Turn On Safety Features After Attack in Barcelona

Barcelona

For those who don’t know, a white van crashed into a crowd this evening in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas district, leaving 12 people dead and 80 injured. Barcelona police have deemed it as an act of terrorism. Shortly after the attack, Facebook (NASDAQ:$FB) and Google (NASDAQ:$GOOGL) activated safety features.

Just like the Paris and London attack, Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature in Barcelona. This feature allows users in the area of the crash to inform their Facebook friends and loved ones that they are safe. It will also let them connect with nearby support.

There is a Facebook page, titled “The attack in Barcelona, Spain”, and people in the area can use it to “check in as safe.” Further, this will be where people can go to see if their friends and family have marked themselves as safe.

Aside from Facebook, Google was another tech company that was quick to act after hearing the news. After the attack, Google activated its new SOS alert feature. The feature was originally launched last month, and today, it will give people searching for “Barcelona attack” up-to-date information and news. Additionally, the page has helpful phrases for those who might have been hurt, such as ‘what’s the emergency number?’ and ‘where’s the public transportation?’

As we continue to learn more about the Barcelona attack, company’s around the globe will try to help in whatever way possible. Hats off to Facebook and Google for being so quick to act!
