Amazon Confirms Expansion Into Downtown Seattle

Amazon Confirms Expansion

Less than a month after Amazon (NASDAQ:$AMZN) confirmed that it was looking to build a second headquarters in North America, it has announced that it plans to expand in Seattle.

On Tuesday, the corporate juggernaut signed a lease for the entire office portion of a planned downtown skyscraper, according to The Seattle Times. The skyscraper, to be named Rainier Square, will be the second tallest building in the Pacific Northwest, according to plans. When it opens 3 years later, it will be among the company’s biggest office buildings, with a capacity for 3,500 additional employees.

This news follows last month’s announcement of a new headquarters in North America. The project, totally $5 billion, will be located in whichever city submits the best bid, according to Amazon’s criteria.

However, some are concerned about the effect the new office will have on the city. Local businesses and city officials are concerned that previous plans to focus on Seattle might be scuttled as the e-commerce site branches out.

Before the second headquarters was announced, Amazon had officially stated that it planned to spend the next several years growing its employees by 20,000 and focusing on expanding its presence in its hometown.

President of Wright Runstad & Co (who are developing the Rainier Square project), Greg Johnson, said, “’I’ve walked away from this with a belief that they are still growing in Seattle now, clearly, and I think they are going to continue to grow”.

Also included in the project will be retail space, an adjacent luxury hotel, and 200 luxury apartments. At 58 stories, it will be the region’s second tallest building, coming in under Columbia Center, which has 76 stories.
