Breaking news: Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., will not be seeking re-election in 2018, issuing a critique about the road the Republican Party has taken under President Trump.
Flake’s decision, which many find to be sudden, was first reported by The Arizona Republic, and it generates uncertainty regarding both his Arizona seat and the GOP’s 52-seat Senate majority.
Jeff Flake, who drew Trump’s fury when he published a book that scolded the party’s identity under Trump, has faced a brutal primary fight from the right.
In a Senate floor speech, Flake said: “Mr. President, I rise today to say, ‘enough.’ We must dedicate ourselves to making sure that the anomalous never becomes the normal.” He added that he was not scolding the president because he enjoyed it, but rather because he felt it was his duty.
Trump is never one to back down when someone opposes him, which is why the president has personally targeted Flake on a number of occasions.
Sen. John McCain, who Trump also dislikes, thanked Flake on Twitter for his service. “Thank you to my dear friend Jeff Flake for your honorable service to the state of #Arizona & the nation.”
