China Forces Apple to Remove Several Apps from its App Store

Several Apps from its App Store

On Tuesday, tech giant Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ:$AAPL) announced that it has removed several apps from its App Store in China after the country’s government claimed these apps violated local laws.

The apps that have been removed include Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:$MSFT) internet phone call and messaging service, as well as Skype.

Here’s what an Apple spokeswoman had to say about the matter:

“We have been notified by the Ministry of Public Security that a number of voice over internet protocol apps do not comply with local law, therefore these apps have been removed from the App Store in China.”

After the apps were removed from Apple’s store, several Chinese users complained that they were unable to pay for Skype’s services via Apple, noting that the disruption started last month.

Skype is just the latest addition to the list of platforms that Chinese users are unable to use. The list also includes internet platforms like Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ:$FB) and Twitter, Inc. (NYSE:$TWTR).
