Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been fighting with reports of defects in its Model S and X autos, saying they’re not as big a deal as people are making them out to be.
According to unnamed employees of Tesla, more than 90% of the Model S and X vehicles have been leaving assembly with defects in need of repair. These defects are said to include doors not closing, water leaks, missing parts, and loose objects, among others.
Tesla, however, claims that production snags are normal with any new launch and that the majority of its post-assembly defects are minor and easily dealt with.
Despite Tesla’s disputes, the constant defects of the Models S and X tend to show that Tesla is a company still struggling to master basic manufacturing. Tesla has been notorious in the past for missing production deadlines.
In response to the reports of the defects, Tesla has emphasized its commitment to safety and quality. “Our goal is to produce perfect cars for every customer,” Tesla said in a prepared statement. “Therefore, we review every vehicle for even the smallest refinement.” A Tesla spokesperson has said that Tesla requires all cars to pass more than 500 inspections and tests. Therefore, the fact that there has been so much rework on cars coming off the assembly line only shows that Tesla is committed to putting out only the best and won’t allow even the smallest mistake to pass through.
