Whether you are thinking about investing in the Netflix stock, or are simply just a fan of binge-watching shows on their platform, today’s news might have an effect on you. Are you ready for it? Netflix (NASDAQ:$NFLX) has officially confirmed that “House of Cards” will be ending after its sixth season, which is currently in production.
Keep in mind Netflix has made it very clear that the decision to end the long-running “House of Cards” came months ago and was not a direct response to Anthony Rapp’s recent allegations that Kevin Spacey sexually assaulted him.
For those who missed it, BuzzFeed published an interview with Rapp on Sunday, who is currently starring in “Star Trek Discovery”, in which he stated that Spacey made a sexual advance on him in 1986. Rapp was just 14 at the time and Spacey was 26 years old.
Unlike Harvey Weinstein, Spacey was quick to respond to the allegations, saying he was “beyond horrified”, although he said he does not remember the incident. “But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years,” Spacey wrote in the statement posted on Twitter. While Netflix assures that the recent allegations have nothing to do with canceling the show, it does seem odd seeing as Spacey is the star and an executive producer on “House of Cards.”
Despite addressing the issue, and appearing to be sincere with his words, Spacey’s response sparked controversy as he also spoke publicly about his sexual orientation for the first time in his statement and said he is gay.
“As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women,” Spacey said. “I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.”
There were a number of celebrities who took to Twitter to criticize Spacey, saying he was trying to distract people from talking about the allegations by coming out.
Production for Season 6 of “House of Cards” commenced earlier in October and is set to air in 2018.
