In the last few months, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:$NFLX) has moved to clean out some of its original content. However, it’s not just the flops like “Girlboss” or “Gypsy” that are getting the ax. High profile shows “Sense8” and ‘The Get Down” have also been handed their pink slips.
Most recently, the streaming giant has canceled “Chelsea”. The talk show followed comedian Chelsea Handler as she traveled the world and interviewed celebrity guests. The show ran for two seasons, airing new episodes every Friday.
However, Netflix has been reluctant to cancel any of its original productions. Depending on how you count it, Netflix has only canceled between 9 and 11 shows. However, CEO Reed Hastings has hinted that this may change in the coming years.
At Code Conference in May, Hastings said, “We’ve canceled very few shows. I’m always pushing the content team. We have to take more risk. You have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.”
Canceled shows include; Chelsea, Sense8, Girlboss, Gypsy, Lilyhammer, Hemlock Grove, Longmire, and The Getdown. As well, Bloodline and The Killing ended, though their stories were concluded.
This news follows Netflix’s recent quarterly review, which saw quarterly profits grow exponentially despite their recent price increase. The review also notably revealed they plan to increase their original content budget by $1 billion to $7 billion.
