It’s been quite the day for the retail sector. On July 27, Amazon (NASDAQ:$AMZN) launched its express, same-day delivery service in Singapore. The service is called Prime Now, and it marks the company’s first foray into the Southeast Asian market.
Essentially, Prime Now will allow users in Singapore to place orders for fast delivery on various items, such as beverages, beer, milk, fresh produce, consumer electronics, and baby products.
The Prime Now app was made available for download on Wednesday in Singapore via Google’s Play store and Apple’s App store. The app is part of Amazon’s prime membership service, and it was originally launched in December of 2014 in New York. Currently, Amazon’s service is available in over 50 cities in nine countries, including Rome, Berlin, Tokyo, London, and Madrid.
How does it work? Well, there are a number of delivery options to choose from. For instance, if you have an order of below 40 Singapore dollars ($29.48), Prime Now users will have to pay a S$5.99 delivery fee. Additionally, if you want your goods within an hour, you will have to pay S$9.99 per order.
“Prime Now is Amazon’s fastest delivery method yet,” Henry Low, who is the director of Prime Now for Asia Pacific at Amazon, said to CNBC. “What we’ve done is we have looked at what our Singapore consumers love to have … (and) we’ve worked with hundreds of local vendors and made (them) available.”
Keep in mind that Prime Now is only available to Prime members, but Amazon has plans to make it available to non-members in Singapore for a limited period of time, thus allowing them to test out the service for free.
