Amazon Severing Ties With The Weinstein Company

The Weinstein Company

Amazon (NASDAQ:$AMZN) announced earlier this week that it was reviewing its options around the shows it was producing from entertainment company The Weinstein Company. And now, it looks like Amazon has made a decision and is moving forth with severing ties with TWC.

The reason? The move follows stories in The New Yorker and The New York Times, in which a number of women claimed that producer Harvey Weinstein had harassed and/or assaulted them. Even though Weinstein himself was fired from the company, it hasn’t helped to save all of The Weinstein Company’s projects. In fact, earlier this week Apple (NASDAQ:$AAPL) canceled a series about Elvis.

In regards to Amazon, the e-commerce giant decide to cancel an untitled project from director David O. Russell entirely. The show starred Russell, Robert De Niro, and Julianne Moore. Following the decision to terminate the show, Russell and the crew released a statement saying they “support Amazon’s decision as in light of recent news and out of respect for all those affected we have decided together that it is best to not move forward with this show.”

Additionally, The Romanoffs, a show from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, will commence production without The Weinstein Company’s involvement.

To no surprise, The Weinstein Company is working extremely hard to distance itself from Harvey. In fact, his brother Bob is insisting, “No F-in way was I aware that that was the type of predator that he was.”

The company is reportedly set to be renamed.
