On Friday, July 28, Walmart Stores Inc. (NYSE:$WMT) workers in Chile voted to go on strike in order to petition for higher wages, according to Reuters.

The workers who voted to go on strike are employees of Lider, which is Walmart’s main supermarket chain in Chile. The union that represents Lider employees posted to its Facebook saying, “We can say that our union approves the strike with 9.850 votes, or 63.4% of the total.”

In an attempt to reach an agreement or prevent the strike, the union or the company could request five-day government-mediated talks.

Right now, the union represents 16,500 workers, thus making it South America’s largest. Workers from the union have demonstrated outside across Chile in the hopes for better wages. In Chile, Walmart operates 380 stores.

Walmart’s stock traded marginally down mid-afternoon.
