Democrats Cancel Meeting with Trump, President Says They Should “Put Aside Their Pettiness”

Meeting with Trump

After almost a year in office, you would think that Donald Trump has learned to think before he signs into Twitter (NYSE:TWTR), but based on Tuesday’s tweets, the president still has a lot to learn.

Congress’ top two Democrats canceled their plans on Tuesday to attend an Oval Office meeting after Trump tweeted that he could not foresee a fiscal deal to avoid a total government shutdown.

“Meeting with “Chuck and Nancy” today about keeping the government open and working. Problem is they want illegal immigrants flooding into our Country unchecked, are weak on Crime and want to substantially RAISE Taxes. I don’t see a deal!”

After the tweet was sent out, a few clever Twitter users suspected Trump, who referred to the leaders as “Chuck and Nancy,” was poking fun at the infamous rock and roll couple “Sid and Nancy,” both of whom did not necessarily have the best of reputations.

As a result, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi released a joint statement which said:

“Given that the President doesn’t see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead. Rather than going to the White House for a show meeting that won’t result in an agreement, we’ve asked Leader McConnell and Speaker Ryan to meet this afternoon.”

The White House meeting this afternoon was supposed to include the top Republican leaders, House Speaker Paul Ryan, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

After Schumer and Pelosi announced the cancellation, both Ryan and McConnell issued a joint statement which accused the Democratic leaders of finding “new excuses not to meet with the administration to discuss these issues.”

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House Press Secretary, said the invitation “still stands,” and that the president “encourages them to put aside their pettiness, stop the political grandstanding, show up and get to work.”
