Google Smart Display is Finally Here!

Google Smart Display: Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Smart Display has finally landed! Huzzah!

It’s taken the company some months since it first announced the display along with a slew of other innovative devices back in January at CES.

CES is the International Consumer Electronics Show and offers the hottest stage for major tech giants to showcase (show-off) their next line of products.

Yes, Google’s answer to Amazon’s Echo Show is here.

Google Smart Display: What Is It?

If you aren’t already familiar with the likes of Google Home, or Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Echo then you probably won’t have heard of Google Smart Display. Here’s the breakdown:

The Google Smart Display is basically the Google Home with a screen. Similar to how rival Amazon Echo Show and Echo Spot have added a screen to the regular Echo and Echo Dot.

If you have called into your neighbor and heard them “speak to the house” saying the likes of “Ok Google, what’s the weather like outside?” Then this neighbor more than likely has a Google Assitant in the house. Similarly, a neighbour may be asking “Alexa” to “play Beethovens Symphony no. 3 in E Flat major” – this neighbour has an Amazon Echo or Echo dot.

So this new Google Smart Display simply gives the Google Assistant more functionality, and means you can ask Google Assistant to do things like show you a YouTube video or a meal recipe.

The Hardware

Google’s first released Smart Display has been created by partners Lenovo. Back at CES, the company announced it’s devices would be from Lenovo, JBL, and LG but Lenovo is the first to hit the shelves. It will set you back $200 for the eight-inch version and $250 for the 10-inch.

A major plus point for Google in the battle for assistant screens is YouTube. It’s Smart Display’s have access to it as it is a Google-owned platform, whereas Amazon’s Echo Show or Spot do not. This may just be the deciding factor to sort the men from the boys in the sales battle for assistant screens.

An assistant screen without YouTube access is like a smart TV without Netflix access – it’s very, very limiting.
