Instagram TV is Officially Live!

Instagram TV

Instagram TV – If you woke up Thursday morning, checked Instagram, and saw a new feature in the top right hand corner: you’re not alone. I, too, saw the new feature this morning, and had no idea what it was. Seriously, I was clueless. Did anyone else see the freaky video that Selena Gomez, the most followed person on Instagram, posted on it?

After I saw that, I knew I had to do some research. And with that, I found that the feature is apart of Instagram’s latest expansion. World, let me introduce to you the latest member of the Instagram family: Instagram TV.

Latest Instagram Expansion: Instagram TV

This is just the latest move on Instagram’s part to lure viewers away from its competition, such as Snapchat and, now, Youtube. A couple of years ago, Instagram added the option of ‘Stories’. Facebook followed close behind, in a move that was a clear steal from Snapchat.

When this happened, Snapchat decreased in popularity. And now, Instagram is attempting to do the same thing, but with viewers on Youtube.

What Does Instagram TV Entail?

In the simplest terms, a new video option is now available through Instagram. The app is being referred to as IGTV for short. This feature will up Instagram’s video time limit, going from 60 seconds to 10 minutes; this will be for the majority of Instagram users.

However, if you have a large following (ie: Instagram famous people, celebrities, etc.) then your videos can be roughly an hour long.

Now, some people might be asking the question of why? Why is Instagram TV necessary? Why can’t it just stay a photo-sharing platform? Well, considering Instagram is nearing its 8th birthday, the platform needs to start getting innovative. If it doesn’t, before we know it, a new shiny company is going to emerge on the scene and steal all of its users.

The answer to these questions boils down to the fact that Instagram wants to be the number one platform for anything and everything. If you have downtime, and you’re on your smartphone and want to watch videos, Instagram doesn’t want you to shut its app and head over to Youtube. Now, you can go from photo-stalking to video-stalking without switching platforms.

The Instagram Stock (NASDAQ:FB)

Are people happy with Instagram TV? Well, Twitter users seem to have a mixture of emotions, but how do investors feel on the stock market?

Looking at the market, the answer is unclear. The FB stock (Facebook owns Instagram) ended the day down by 0.25%, which isn’t too bad, but it still means the stock ended the session in the red zone.

The Instagram TV Takeaway

How do you feel about the feature? I’ll admit that I’m indifferent—right now. I saw it, spent about 30 seconds on it, and went straight to Youtube. So, I’m not entirely sure how much of a success it will be, but, with celebrities like Selena Gomez using it, there’s likely going to be at least one demographic that gets into it.
