IOTA Says there is No Partnership with Microsoft

Despite speculation and the announcement made in November, IOTA (private) has confirmed that there is no partnership between itself and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) at the moment.

Microsoft reconfirmed this by saying that “IOTA is a Microsoft Azure customer and plans to use Azure to test and deploy its Data Marketplace.”

While there is no formal agreement between the two companies, they are working together to develop a series of technology innovation exercises with IOTA’s Tangle network.

IOTA will be hosting several meetups in Microsoft offices in order to show off what Tangle and its data marketplace can do. During these meetups, weather sensors will be installed and connected to IOTA’s ledger technology, with Microsoft merely acting in leadership rather than an official partnership.

IOTA claims the company “never stated that there was any formal partnership with Microsoft, and instead always referred to them as a participant in the marketplace.”

Dominik Schiener, co-founder of IOTA, further explained the situation, saying, “The media has overblown the story into a ‘IOTA launches Data Marketplace with Microsoft’, which couldn’t be further from the truth, as we are working together with more than 30 of the largest companies in the world on the marketplace as a co-innovation exercise. When it comes to our communication and the involvement of Microsoft, we have asked for written and explicit approval of the press release, quote and logo beforehand and have stayed within the boundaries with what we were allowed to do.”
