Jack Ma, Alibaba’s Founder and Executive Chairman, states that his company can no longer meet its promise to create one million jobs within the United States, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported yesterday. In the Jack Ma Interview, the founder states that he won’t be able to thanks to the newly imposed tariffs.

Back in January of 2017. Ma met with President Trump to discuss how adding small and medium-sized US businesses to Alibaba’s platform would boost employment. Nearly one million jobs would be brought to the US if this occurred, but the Alibaba Chairman has withdrawn his position on the collaboration.

“The promise was made based on China and the U.S. having a collaborative and friendly relationship,” he said in the Xinhua interview. “The situation now has completely destroyed our premise, so it can no longer be completed.”

US and China have been engaging in an on-going trade war, and Ma has grown increasingly critical of the trade battle. Ma feels that the trade battle will damage businesses around the world.

In the interview, Ma said that he will keep up the efforts to push for healthy development of bilateral trades between the country. The Chairman says that trade is not a weapon and should not be used for wars.

On Monday, President Trump imposed 10 percent tariffs on around $200 billion worth of imports from China. He also threatened duties on around $260 billion more if the country retaliated. China retaliated with tariffs on around $60 billion of US goods the next day. China did, however, reduce the level of tariffs it would collect on the products.

“The U.S. like competition, China likes harmony, they’re two different cultures,” Ma said at an investor conference in Shanghai on Tuesday, prior to the interview.
