Jeff Bezos Sending Humans to Space Next Year: Too Good to be True?

Jeff Bezos

Jeff Bezos was named the richest person in history back in January. And, based on this week’s announcement, that label wasn’t enough for him. Now, Bezos will be adding ‘sending people to space’ to his resume.

On Wednesday, Bezos announced that Blue Origin (his space-launch company; headquartered in Kent, Washington) will be sending people to space in 2019. Specifically, Blue Origin will be launching a crewed mission in the new year.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Sending People to Space

For anyone studying communications, you’ll know that Blue Origin sending people to space is a clear as day example of a strategic input, which is when an organization switches to one main focus. For instance, when President Kennedy focused all of his attention and resources on sending people to the moon. That’s basically what Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin are doing.

What Do We Know

Details are scarce at the moment, with the Amazon founder making his comments at the Air Force Association’s Air, Space, and Cyber Conference in Washington yesterday. However, we were given a few points of confirmation:

  • Bezos will put people into space in 2019
  • He’s investing over $1 billion in Blue Origin’s satellite-launch program
  • The unit is called the New Shepard
  • The New Shepard unit will be open to tourists who want to launch into space

The Amazon Stock Price (NASDAQ:AMZN)

If Elon Musk said something like this, the media would be blowing up with negative comments. Is it possible? Is it a smart idea? However, because it’s Jeff Bezos (a tech CEO who has proved himself to be in the top tier of executives with barely any scandal), the market is optimistic.

As of 3:55 p.m. EDT, the Amazon stock is up 0.96%.

The Takeaway
