Pakistan Blocks Youtube, Twitter, and Facebook Amid Islamist Protests

Pakistan

Sources have reported that Pakistan has blocked access to Youtube (NASDAQ:$GOOGL), Twitter (NYSE:$TWTR), and Facebook (NASDAQ:$FB) in the midst of cracking down on protests.

According to the Associated Press, Pakistan’s blockage of these social media sites comes after six people died and 200 others were severely injured after authorities tried to clear Islamist protests from highways that took place near the capital of Islamabad.

Not only that, but Pakistan also issued a media blackout, which caused a number of its major TV stations to go off the air.

While Facebook and Youtube have yet to publicly comment on the blockage, Twitter has confirmed that Pakistan has blocked its service, tweeting:

“We are aware of reports that the Pakistani government has taken action to block Twitter service, as well as other social media services, and that users are having difficulty using Twitter in Pakistan. We are monitoring the situation and hope service will be fully restored soon.”

Unsurprisingly, the block resulted in social media backlash, with a number of journalists in the region bringing attention to Pakistan’s actions.

One Twitter user wrote:

“Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Dailymotion blocked in #Pakistan as govt tries to block communication for religious protesters & everything else.”

There are also several reports which state that the federal government in Pakistan is considering temporarily suspending mobile phone signals.
