At long last, Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is letting us mute those annoying autoplay ads on websites, and everybody’s celebrating.
If you update to Chrome 64 beta, you’ll be able to use this feature. All you need to do is click on the green lock icon next to the URL on a website playing videos and then change the sound option for the site. You can make it “always block on this site” if you want.
The update also prevents the website from redirecting visitors automatically and is meant to provide a much more smooth and enjoyable browsing experience. Additionally, it offers an enhanced pop-up blocker, HDR video playback for Windows 10, split view for Chrome OS, and many other features.
While this is great news for users, it could spell trouble for the small-time websites that rely on the ad income of those videos and pop-ups. If that’s the case, these websites may have to resort to other tactics in order to make a profit, such as enlisting mandatory subscription fees.
