Instagram Mute Button: The photo-sharing social media platform Instagram has announced its new “Mute” feature today. This feature will allow users to hide posts from individuals that they may be following.
According to the press release, with Instagram’s new feature users “can make [their] feed even more personalized to what matters to [them].”
Accounts that have been muted won’t be seen on a user’s Instagram feed and won’t be notified of this action, but users will still be able to look at the muted accounts profile and will still receive notifications if they are tagged or mentioned in a post.
Users can mute posts, stories, or both posts and stories from other accounts and are also able to “un-mute” as well.
The new feature is going to be put into action and tested within the next several weeks.
The social media company has made several efforts to try and listen to its users, including changes to the Instagram feed in March and providing more information on how the feed works.

The new feature has had some positive feedback from certain articles, such as one from CNN Money, that have noted how users can now “mute that annoying friend from college who posts incessantly — without unfollowing (and offending) them.”
According to CNNMoney, Instagram has said that the new feature could help “[manage] complex social dynamics,” such as “muting someone who irks you…or slyly muting an ex after a breakup.”
Muting would offer users “a less aggressive option than unfollowing another user.”
Instagram is faring better than it’s parent company, Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) which has been under fire for several months regarding user information and privacy policies.
Shares of Facebook have fallen approximately 0.20% since the market opened Tuesday morning.
As of 12:10 pm EDT, Facebook shares were hovering around $184.15 USD after opening at a share value of $184.93.
