Snapchat Will Separate “Social” from “Media”

Snapchat

Snap (NYSE:SNAP) has finally released details on its long-awaited (and necessary) redesign.

The app will still open the same way, opening onto the camera, but according to Snapchat, the redesign “separates the social from the media.” This means exactly what you think it means – personal and industry are fully separated from one another. Snaps and Stories made by friends and family will be viewable in the “dynamic Friends” page on the left, while published content will exist only to the right in a new Discover section.

Snap will be using algorithmic curation in its new Discover section in order to make Discover personalized to the user. Snap’s algorithms will focus solely on the user’s interests, and not include the user’s friend’s interests, as some other social sites tend to do. Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel claims that this “helps guard against fake news and mindless scrambles for friends and unworthy distractions.” The model will work a lot like Netflix’s, using machine-learning algorithms to recommend content based on viewing history.

We’ll have to see if this redesign of the app helps Snap to boost its ad revenues, as well as improve the user experience.
