Intel Completes Mobileye Tender Offer; Set to Build a Fleet of Fully Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous Vehicles

Are you interested in the semiconductor industry? If so, you’re going to want to hear today’s news. On Wednesday, August 9, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:$INTC) announced that Mobileye (NYSE:$MBLY), which is an Intel Company, will commence building a fleet of fully autonomous vehicles for testing in Europe, Israel, and the United States. Keep in mind these will be autonomous level 4 SAE vehicles. This is all possible now that the tender offer of Mobileye is complete.

The first of the vehicles will be distributed later in 2017, and, in the course of time, the fleet will scale to more than 100 automobiles.

“Building cars and testing them in real-world conditions provides immediate feedback and will accelerate delivery of technologies and solutions for highly and fully autonomous vehicles,” said soon-to-be senior VP of Intel Amnon Shashua. “Geographic diversity is very important as different regions have very diverse driving styles as well as different road conditions and signage. Our goal is to develop autonomous vehicle technology that can be deployed anywhere, which means we need to test and train the vehicles in varying locations.”

With these new test vehicles, Intel’s new entity will combine proprietary capabilities from Mobileye, such as computer vision, sensing, mapping and driving policy, along with Intel’s open compute platforms and expertise in data center and 5G communications technologies. All of this will deliver a complete “car-to-cloud” system.

Essentially, the test fleet will showcase novel concepts of mapping and safety validation, as well as serving as a base to interact directly with regulators.

“Our customers will benefit from our ability to use this fleet to accelerate our technology department. We want to enable automakers to deliver driverless cars faster while reducing costs – data we collect will save our customers significant costs.”
