Trump Administration to Allow Import of Sport-Hunted Trophies From Elephants

Import of Sport-Hunted Trophies

The Trump administration has officially announced that it will be, once again, allowing the import of sport-hunted trophies from elephants hunted in Zimbabwe. This overturns yet another Obama-era policy.

On Friday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will commence issuing permits that were previously banned. However, a suspension on the imports of trophies from elephants that are hunted in Tanzania remains.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, sports hunting, when a part of a “sound wildlife management program”, can help to provide “benefits to conservation.”

Here’s what the Service had to say in a statement:

“We are now able to find that African elephant trophy hunting in Zimbabwe will enhance the survival of the species in the wild. This enhancement finding is required prior to allowing import of elephant trophies under our Endangered Species Act (ESA) regulations,”

Many have taken to social media to criticize the Trump administration for this decision as the Trump family is known for supporting trophy hunting. In fact, there are numerous photos of the Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump posing with their sporting kills on social media.
