Trump Says Gun Control Would Have Made “No Difference” in Texas Church Shooting

On Sunday, a gunman walked into a small-town Texas church and killed 26 people. The ages ranged from 18 months to 77 years old. The world is at a loss for words as this deadly shooting comes only one month after the horrific Las Vegas massacre. Citizens around the world are banding together, vocalizing that the United States needs to move forward with gun control, but President Trump seems to have a different opinion on the matter.

On Tuesday, during a press conference in South Korea, Trump stated that stronger background checks for gun purchases would have made Sunday’s shooting even deadlier.

Ali Vitali, a reporter for NBC, asked the president if he would consider “extreme vetting” for any individual looking to purchase a gun. After Trump described gun control as “a situation that probably shouldn’t be discussed right now,” he said stronger background checks would have made “no difference” in Sunday’s attack.

Following Trump’s initial comments on gun control, he cited Stephen Willeford, the Sutherland Springs resident who came face to face with the shooter Devin Kelley. If the United States were to issue stronger background checks, Trump said, “you might not have had that very brave person who happened to have a gun or a rifle in his truck go out and shoot him and hit him and neutralize him. I can only say this: If he didn’t have a gun, instead of having 26 dead, you would have had hundreds more dead.”

Despite what Trump believes, the fact that remains is Kelley would not have been able to purchase a gun legally as he was dishonorably discharged from the Air Force after a domestic violence conviction. The current background check system missed Kelley which allowed him the chance to purchase weapons, including the one he used on Sunday.
