Trump Stays Silent After Central Michigan University Shooting

I didn’t think this would happen again so soon. I thought major changes were underway after the St. Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Then again, I said the same thing after the Las Vegas shooting. The point is, I didn’t think the world would once again be in mourning so soon.

We are, though. And what has President Trump said about the latest devastation? Absolutely nothing.

What Happened Today?

News broke on today that a gunman opened fire at a dormitory at Central Michigan University. A short time later, campus police announced that two people were fatally shot. This marks the United States’ 12th shooting in 2018. If that doesn’t rip your heart out, think of it this way: we are only nine weeks into the new year. Twelve school shootings in nine weeks is disgraceful.

The Central Michigan University shooting reportedly took place at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning in the Campbell Hall dormitory. According to police,  the fatalities were not students and the suspect is still at large. James Eric Davis Jr. has been identified as the suspect, and reports surfaced that the 19-year old had been in contact with the police Thursday night after a drug-related disturbance. To me, the most shocking aspect of all of this is that Davis was taken to a hospital Thursday night and then shortly released.

I’m not sure what causes the United States to overlook important things like access to automatic weapons and mental health awareness. Until they stop this, it pains me to say that I don’t think these tragedies are going to stop anytime soon.

What Has Trump Said about the Central Michigan University Shooting?

The shooting took place this morning, and yet, the president has stayed silent. One can’t blame that on the president being busy and not having access to sites like Twitter either. Trump was on Twitter at 5 A.M. this morning, bashing actor Alec Baldwin, and was online around noon, paying his respects to the late Billy Graham.

This is one thing that infuriated me. Never once in the days following the Florida shooting did Trump tweet “Rest in Peace to those killed at the Florida shooting”, or something along those lines. Nor has he said anything like that about today’s Central Michigan University shooting. He did, however, tweet “Rest in Peace Billy Graham!” in all capitals today.

I find that so appalling. The president will pay his respects to an American evangelist, a man who was a significant evangelical Christian figure, but not the generation he is supposed to be protecting.

The Takeaway

I don’t know about you, but I’m going to be keeping a close eye on Trump’s twitter to see if he says anything about the shooting. By now, the majority of the world is aware of what happened, so you would expect some sort of comment in the hours to come.

To the families of those killed, the world stands with you. To the Marjory Stoneman Douglas students, now is the time to fight even harder!
