Trump Vows to Spend $430K to Cover Legal Fees of Aides Amid Russia Investigation

Trump

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump vowed to spend roughly $430,000 of his own money to help cover legal fees for White House aides and campaign staff related to the investigation into Russia’s election meddling.

According to a White House official, Trump’s vow is not meant to be seen as a reimbursement to the Republican National Committee (RNC), which has spent an identical amount on lawyers representing Trump and his eldest son Donald Trump Jr.

The official informed Axios on Saturday that the money offered would be used to “defray the costs of legal fees for his associates, including former and current White House aides.”

Further, according to the Washington Post, the official disclosed that Trump’s pledge did not prevent him from increasing the amount available for aides in the future.

Additionally, the official did not pinpoint how the payouts would be structured or which aides would be receiving them.

The president’s move comes amid ongoing investigations by special counsel Robert Mueller and the House and Senate Intelligence committees into Russia’s attempts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election.

As of right now, investigators have heard a number of testimonies from Trump associates, and the legal fees for staff members under scrutiny are forecasted to increase.
