Twitter Is Going to Start Banning Abusive Accounts

Twitter

Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) says that it will start banning accounts that perpetuate abusive and violent content in order to “make Twitter a safer place”.

Twitter’s new policies will be focusing on hate symbols, unwanted sexual advancements, and abuse. Accounts will also be prohibited from associating with hate groups. Any accounts continuing to do any of these things will be permanently suspended on Twitter. Twitter’s new policies will be effective as of today.

Already, accounts have started being banned. The Britain First account, an account for the far-right, ultra-nationalist British political organization, was suspended. The leaders of the organization, Jayda Fransen and Paul Golding, have also had their personal accounts suspended.

Twitter is attempting to combat the barrage of abusive language and behavior the social media platform has been seeing in numerous tweets. The company has long been criticized for bolstering this type of behavior, and it is now working towards controlling it – but it still has a long way to go, which Twitter acknowledges:

“In our efforts to be more aggressive here, we may make some mistakes and are working on a robust appeals process. We’ll evaluate and iterate on these changes in the coming days and weeks, and will keep you posted on progress along the way.”
