The conversation of ‘fake news’ continues. It started during the 2016 presidential election, and it went straight through to the Cambridge Analytica scandal we saw play out a few months ago. Now, it’s back: Facebook Canada Tackles Fake News.
Facebook Canada Tackles Fake News: June 27, 2018
On Wednesday, it was announced that Facebook Canada has hired Agence France-Presse (AFP), an independent fact-checker, to vet various pieces of news content, as well as blog postings, that appear on Facebook Canada.
Some people might be getting tired of the fake news conversation, but it’s still a very real problem, and it was only a matter of time that Facebook Canada did something to help ease the severity of the issue.
Why? Well, this is a conversation that is still heavily discussed in Canadian politics. Therefore, the third-party fact-checker will be used during the next federal election.
For those who don’t know, the next election takes place in October. With extreme caution, Facebook Canada will be covering the election, but remember: AFP will be watching.
Facebook Canada Tackles Fake News: What Will AFP Do?
In the simplest terms, AFP will be looking at news stories that appear on the platform. Its job is to determine whether or not the information is accurate. If the story is found to be misleading, Facebook will add a warning sign.

It’s important to remember that AFP can’t prevent fake news all by itself. In order for this to work, Facebook is going to rely on Canadians to report articles that appear to be fake or propaganda.
So, remember: if during the next federal election you see an article that is a blatant lie, make sure you report it.
How Did the FB Stock (NASDAQ:FB) Do Today?
On the same day that the news spread, the FB stock ended the day down by 1.59%, according to Google Finance.
