North Korea Summit Back On? Trump Hints Yes

north korea summit

Earlier this month, President Trump and Kim Jong Un set a date for the highly anticipated North Korea summit. After months of name-calling and threatening the other with their respective big red buttons, the two world leaders had reportedly decided on a date and location for their meeting. Skeptics hit the scene at full force, claiming something would happen in the following few weeks, resulting in the meeting being cancelled.

It turns out the skeptics were right. Or were they?

Trump Hints at Resurrection of North Korea Summit

On Thursday, Donald Trump pulled out of the North Korea summit. It was here Trump was supposed to sit down and talk with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. However, due to bad faith on the part of the North Koreans, Trump cancelled the summit. Specifically, Trump said North Koreans have shown “tremendous anger and open hostility” in recent statements.

While most of the general public were expecting one of the two leaders to pull out of the meeting, Kim Kye Gwan, Vice Foreign Minister, stated that the U.S. president’s withdrawal was both regrettable and “unexpected.” Things changed on Friday, however. Both sides issued statements, and both hinted that the meeting could still very well take place next month in Singapore.

On Friday, as Trump left the White House, he stated that “everybody plays games,” adding that the North Koreans “very much want to do it,” and that “we’d like to do it.” Again, it’s not just Trump who has dropped hints. North Korea also made a statement Friday, in which it said it is willing to give the United States a second chance, and will reconsider the summit “at any time, at any format.” In response, Trump said that North Korea’s statement was “very good news.”

The Takeaway

It looks like the ball is in Trump’s court. He was the one who cancelled the meeting, and it appears North Korea is more than willing to give the president the time to sit down and talk. It makes one wonder if Trump cancelled the meeting on purpose, knowing full well he would end up going through with it. After all, Trump does like to be the center of attention.
