Trump zero tolerance policy: Between April and the end of last month, almost 2,000 children have been separated from their parents at the border.
This is due to the Trump administration charging those who have entered the United States illegally – the parents, that is, not the children. Under the Trump zero tolerance policy, individuals who enter the US illegally with their children are separated from them.
The result of this separation is that the migrant children are being held in cages and tents.
Now, Trump has done a lot of negative stuff since he was inaugurated in January 0f 2017. But, in my opinion, this is perhaps one of the worst.
Yesterday, a reporter played a recording of numerous children crying out for their parents. It was utterly heartbreaking – as are the photos – and yet, Trump remains defiant over his policy. In fact, Trump’s comments from Tuesday have already raised hell, not even four hours since he spoke them.
Trump’s Latest Comments
Yesterday, photos of children in cages circulated around the Internet, sparking both backlash and tears. Many have called for Trump to change this policy immediately. However, the 45th president of the United States has no plans to do so, even going so far as to say that he doesn’t feel there’s any choice but to continue with his zero tolerance policy.
Today, speaking to a small business group, Trump said that he feels he has to “take the children away” from their parents. Why? In simplest terms, Trump doesn’t think illegal border jumpers will learn in any other way.
He did continue to say that while he doesn’t “want the children to be taken away from [their] parents,” it is a necessity if the United States wants to charge the parents separately.
The president’s exact words were the following:
“We want to solve family separation, and I don’t want the children to be taken away from parents, and when you are prosecute [sic] the parents for coming in illegally — which should happen — you have to take the children away.”
The Takeaway
In times of hardship, it’s very easy to ignore things that don’t directly involve you. If we’re going to change as a human race, now is the time. We should not ignore the Trump zero tolerance policy – we should fight it. No matter the problems regarding illegal immigrants in the US, we should not be separating young children and forcing them into cages.
