Columbia Created a ‘Star Wars’-Themed Jacket Line and It Sold Out in Minutes

'Star Wars'-Themed Jacket

The Columbia Sportswear Company (NASDAQ:COLM) designed a new jacket line called the Echo Base Collection, inspired by ‘Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back’ and it looks awesome. Don’t get too excited though, because it’s already completely sold out.

The collection consisted of three jackets, based on those worn by Luke, Han, and Leia during their time on the icy Hoth planet. Each jacket was designed to “keep you warmer than a tauntaun.”

1,980 copies of each jacket were made, in honor of the 1980 release date of the movie, and, already, there isn’t a single one left. The jackets sold out instantly online, and those that were sent to stores were grabbed up just as fast.

Columbia has said that the Luke jacket sold out in 5 minutes and 22 seconds, the Han parka in 6 minutes and 23 seconds, and the Leia jacket in 7 minutes and 5 seconds.

Overnight, people were camping out outside a few of the Columbia stores carrying the jackets, just to guarantee themselves a Star Wars-themed coat. Some locations were also holding in-store events, featuring Star Wars characters and a chance to win a Han jacket signed by Harrison Ford.

For those of us who weren’t able to get our hands on the near-instant sell-outs, we may be out of luck. Columbia has said that it has no plans to make any more.

What led to the whopping success of this collection? “I think there were several factors at play,” said Columbia spokesman Andy Nordhoff. “Two recognized brands joining forces to honor one of the epic movies of all time certainly grabs people’s attention. The jackets also turned out beautifully and are not costumes. We built them to withstand freezing temperatures on Hoth or other galaxies closer to home.”
