One of the many advantages of electric vehicles is that they require less maintenance compared to gas-powered vehicles. This is because electric motors are a lot less complicated than traditional engines. Additionally, even with less maintenance, electric vehicles also last a lot longer than gas-powered vehicles. In the case of future electric vehicles from Tesla (NASDAQ:$TSLA), they could last a lifetime.
Among his many ambitious endeavors — like the underground tunnel project and increasing the usage of solar energy — Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced that one of Tesla’s long-term goals is to make the vehicles’ power-trains last 1 million miles. This means that the cars would never run out of power from prolonged use. As a result, the company has made several improvements to some of the main components of its vehicles, like the battery pack, inverter, and electric motors.
These improvements are still being done, dating as early as last weekend when several reports of Tesla’s performance enhancements to its Model S and Model X surfaced. While the improvements were not spoken about in detail, Tesla did confirm that it included both software and hardware upgrades as well as the fact that the enhancements will only be on the vehicles currently in production. As such, the Model S P100D and Model X P100D will not be receiving the performance enhancements.
On July 4, 2017, Electrek learned that one of the new hardware upgrades included an updated version of one of Tesla’s 3 electric motors, the main rear-wheel-drive motor. The number of parts for this motor have been changed and, as a result, all vehicles that received any of Tesla’s updates have received the newly-improved motor. The new drive unit will allow vehicles equipped with it to accelerate from 0 mph to 60 mph in about one second.
Tesla has also been reportedly working on a brand new electric motor for the highly anticipated Model 3. Some consumers have speculated that Model 3’s electric motor will see some of the improvements seen on the updated Model S and Model X motors.
It seems that Electrek’s predictions of a Model S update to differentiate its performance from the more affordable Model 3 have come true. It was previously speculated that the Model 3’s performance would closely match the Model S’s, but with these new motor upgrades to the Model S and Model X this might not be the case any more.
