Facebook Admits to Promoting News Stories that Falsely Identified Las Vegas Shooter

Falsely Identified Las Vegas Shooter

Facebook (NASDAQ:$FB) seemed to be en route to putting its fake news scandals behind them, but all of that changed when the company promoted news stories that claimed the shooter in the Las Vegas massacre was a Democrat who strongly opposed President Trump.

In case you missed it, Facebook admitted on Monday, October 2, that its system automatically promoted news stories that falsely identified the Las Vegas shooter. The California-based company announced that links from websites were posted and spread across their site late Sunday night, just hours after hundreds were severely injured at a festival near the Mandalay Bay casino.

Why is this a problem? Well, the stories claimed the Las Vegas shooter was an “anti-Trump” Democrat and featured pictures of a man who is not identified as a suspect.

Facebook released a statement to the public, saying “We identified false news in the Crisis Response hub yesterday morning and removed it. However, the removal was delayed, allowing it to be screen captured and circulated online. We are working to fix the issue that allowed this to happen in the first place and deeply regret the confusion this caused.”
